Journey Through History

Taşkale; a village located at the foothills of Yeşildere Valley

Taşkale is a mysterious corner of Karaman. This village of which story dates back to ancient times, is almost an open-air museum with its houses, churches and mosques carved into the rocks.

While visiting Taşkale, you feel like you are traveling in a time tunnel. Churches from the Byzantine period, mosques from the Ottoman period and warehouses carved on the rocks form the historical texture of the village.

Taşkale hosted many Turkmen and Yoruk tribes with the arrival of the Seljuks in Anatolia. Due to the settlement policy implemented by the Ottoman Empire in order to Turkify and Islamize the lands captured in Rumelia, some of the Turkmen living here migrated to today's Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia and Serbia. Ataturk's maternal and paternal ancestors, the Red Oghuz Turkmens and Konyars, were also among those who migrated to Rumelia. For this reason, Taşkale is also known as Atatürk's ancestral homeland.

The 352 grain warehouses in Taşkale are the tourism center that receives the most visitors in the region today. Some of these warehouses, the oldest of which is estimated to have been excavated 1000 years ago, were excavated during the Christian period and some during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. The warehouses are in a large area and are 40 meters high in places. Taşkale, one of the hidden treasures of Karaman, has hosted many civilizations throughout history and has a unique tourism potential with its rich cultural heritage and natural beauties.

Taşkale attracts attention not only with its history but also with its natural beauties. Located at the foothills of Yeşildere Valley, the village provides peace with its lush nature. Taşkale Canyon, located near the village, is also an ideal place for hiking and camping.

Taşkale cuisine is also very rich. You should not return without tasting the local delicacies in the village, where products such as grapes, plums, walnuts and almonds are grown. Especially walnut sausage and grape molasses are very famous.
